Longed
to travel
A Closer Look
It is possible that Mary was quite surprised to find herself married
to George and working at a mission school. In addition to her generally
low opinion of divinity students, she wrote in an
1859 letter:
“Yes, how I would like to hear… the
sea. Am not so engrossed in the Mission as not to think of my old
favorite, prospective
travels!
Oh no- you know I never pretend to any missionary spirit — I
am interested in the school, of course. But it would be like enacting
a farce for me to be a missionary.”

Mary spent most of her life in mission work, see Mary
