EnmegahbowhA Closer LookEnmegahbowh (baptized John Johnson) was born in 1820, the son of an Ojibway chief in Ontario. He was recruited and educated by Methodist missionaries and assisted them in their work in Michigan and Wisconsin. In 1845, he met Episcopal missionary priest Ezekial Gear at Fort Snelling and switched to Epsicopalianism. In 1852 he co-founded the St. Columba Mission at Gull Lake with James Lloyd Breck and in 1859 was ordained as a deacon in the Episcopal church. At risk to his own life, he played a significant role in warning whites about collusion between Ojibway Chief Hole-in the-Day and Sioux leader Little Crow during the U.S. Dakota War. He became a good friend of Henry Whipple and founded a church at the White Earth reservation. He also inspired the negotiation of a lasting peace between the Ojibway and the Dakota in 1869. He died in 1902 at the age of 82.
