Children
A
Closer Look
Alexander and Elizabeth had ten children, the
first born in 1826, the last in 1850. Two died in infancy. The
Faribault children were:
George, born 1826
Agnes, born 1829
Emily, born 1832
David or Daniel, born 1834
Catherine, born 1836
Philip (died as infant)
Julia, born 1841
William, born 1847
Nathalie (died as infant)
Alexander or "Leon," born 1850
In a
letter
dated February 13, 1849, and written by Alexander Faribault in
Mendota to his friend Henry Sibley, Alexander noted:
"I send you a little
lock of hair which I wish you will have the kindness to have
a wring and breast
pin made & have the hair pooting [put in]. it is the hair
of my little girl I lost last winter..."
This letter probably refers to the death of
Nathalie. Jewelry
made from the hair of deceased family members was popular at the
time.
Women
also
collected
hair
from
their brushes in "hair catchers" kept on their dressers
to make other artwork.
