Create A Digital Design with Open-Source Software

3D design software allows you to construct a 3D model by simply dragging and dropping shapes (programming knowledge not necessary). Buckham Library suggests Tinkercad as an easy software for designing 3D models. Tinkercad is a free online open-source design software. Export and Prepare Design for Printing

A design needs to be sliced before it can be 3D printed. Download and install the free slicing software, Cura to your computer.

Get Cura for Ultimaker 2+ here: https://ultimaker.com/en/products/cura-software

Learn How to Use Cura

When slicing your design be sure to use the following settings in Cura:

  • Printer: Ultimaker 2+
  • Nozzle: 0.4 mm
  • Material: PLA
  • Setup: Simple
  • Profile: Normal Quality
  • Infill: Light
  • Helpers: Generate Brim & General Support Structure

Designs should be saved in the .stl file format.

IMPORTANT: Instead of saving your file to a removable drive (SD card) as directed in the Cura video, please save the .stl file of your design to your computer.
